Frequently Asked Questions
ordering your portrait
How does the custom portrait process work?
Choose your:
- Number of subjects — your pet alone, your pet with you or other family members, or people only
- Size
- Orientation — Square, Portrait or Landscape
- Portrait style — we offer a variety of options
After you place your order, we’ll email you instructions for submitting your photographs.
You’ll receive a digital proof for review and approval before anything enters physical production. Once you approve the proof, we’ll produce and finish your portrait, including framing where applicable.
Please note that some portrait styles are available for one subject only. All portraits currently include a Black Floater Frame in the listed price, except when offered as part of a special Canvas Only promotion.
Will I see a proof before my portrait is produced?
Yes. You’ll receive a digital proof for review and approval before anything enters physical production. Nothing is physically produced until you have approved the proof.
What types of portraits do you create?
We create custom portraits of pets, people, couples and families. Your portrait can feature a single subject or bring several much-loved pets and family members together.
Can my portrait include pets and people together?
Yes. Pets and people can be included together in the same portrait, provided the selected size, orientation and style are available for the total number of subjects.
Under Portraits, you’ll find options for:
- Pet Only
- Pets & Humans
- Humans Only
How many subjects can I include in one portrait?
You can include up to four subjects through our standard ordering options.
For portraits with more than four subjects, please contact us. These may be available by special request, subject to approval of the composition, photographs and selected size.
Available sizes, orientations and styles vary depending on the number of subjects.
What counts as one subject?
Each person or animal appearing in the portrait counts as one subject. For example, two dogs and one person would count as three subjects.
Do I need to have my photographs ready before placing my order?
No. You must place your order first. We’ll contact you afterward with instructions for sending your photographs.
How do I send my photographs after ordering?
We’ll email you instructions for submitting your digital photographs directly to The Art Shop.
Please send the original, highest-resolution files available rather than screenshots, social-media downloads or compressed copies. After reviewing the photographs you submit, we may ask for additional images so we can see important details more clearly.
Can I order through one of your Authorized Selling Partners?
Yes. An Authorized Selling Partner can help you select the number of subjects, size, orientation and style. You will pay the partner directly, and they will notify The Art Shop of the order. The Art Shop will contact you with instructions for submitting your photographs and will manage the creative process from that point forward.
photographs
What kind of photographs work best for a portrait?
Clear, well-lit, high-resolution photographs produce the best results. The subject’s face, eyes, expression and important features should be visible and in focus. Natural daylight is often ideal.
For full-body pet portraits, we may also need photographs that clearly show the pet’s tail, paws and distinctive colour markings.
Avoid heavily filtered images, dark photographs, screenshots and images in which important parts of the subject are cropped or obscured.
Can you work from an older or lower-quality photograph?
Sometimes. We understand that an older image may be the only photograph available, particularly for a memorial portrait.
Please send the original digital file or the highest-resolution version available, rather than a screenshot or a copy downloaded from social media. You may also send alternative photographs that help us see important details more clearly.
If the photograph exists only as a printed copy, please take a clear, well-lit, straight-on photograph of it, making sure there is no glare, shadow or reflection. We’ll assess the digital image before proceeding and let you know if it is too small, dark, blurred or unclear to produce a portrait that meets our standards.
What happens if my photograph is not suitable?
We’ll contact you and ask for a better, replacement or additional photograph.
The portrait process cannot properly begin until we have received photographs that contain enough detail to create the artwork.
Can you remove or change something in the original photograph?
Minor adjustments may be possible. Tell us what you would like changed when you submit your photographs, and our creative team will confirm what can reasonably be done.
More substantial changes may affect the composition, require additional creative work or result in a price adjustment.
Can you keep the original background from my photograph?
Yes. Our Natural style is designed to preserve the overall setting and background of your photograph while refining the image into artwork. We generally tone down the background so that the subjects remain the main focus.
Our Emerald, Topaz and Travertine styles use their own distinctive studio-inspired backgrounds.
Can I change my source photograph after the artwork has been started?
The proof is created from the photograph you submit. Any request to change the source photograph after work on the proof has begun must be reviewed by The Art Shop before proceeding.
Changing the photograph after work has begun may require the artwork to be restarted and may affect the timing and price of the order.
styles, sizes and framing
Which portrait styles are available?
Our current portrait collection includes:
- Natural
- Emerald
- Topaz
- Travertine
- Inspired by Masters, available in a range of styles
Some styles have specific composition or subject-count requirements.
What is the difference between the available portrait styles?
Natural: Preserves the truest character of your original photograph, including its setting and background. Our artists refine the lighting, colour and details while keeping the expression and feeling of the original moment.
Emerald: Features a richly toned studio-green background. It has a refined, timeless and subtly regal quality.
Topaz: Blends warm yellow and soft grey tones to create a bright, joyful and modern portrait.
Travertine: Features a warm, stone-inspired background in soft beige, taupe and natural clay tones. Its subtle organic texture gives the portrait an earthy, contemporary and quietly refined appearance.
Inspired by Masters: Includes a range of distinctive portrait concepts influenced by iconic artworks, artistic periods and recognizable visual traditions. Some are classic, while others are playful or humorous. Subject-count availability varies by style.
What sizes and orientations are available?
Our portraits are available in square, portrait and landscape formats.
Square sizes range from 18 × 18 to 48 × 48 inches. Portrait sizes range from 18 × 24 to 42 × 56 inches, and landscape sizes range from 24 × 18 to 56 × 42 inches.
The available options depend on the number of subjects and the selected portrait style.
Are all sizes available for every number of subjects?
No. Some smaller sizes are suitable only for one or two subjects. Portrait orientation is currently available for one- and two-subject portraits, while three- and four-subject portraits are offered in selected square and landscape sizes.
The available options will be shown on the website after you select the number of subjects.
Is a frame included with my portrait?
Yes. Every portrait currently includes a frame unless we are offering a special canvas-only promotion.
What type of frame is included?
We currently offer our Black Floater Frame as the standard frame.
Other floater-frame colours may be available by special request and must be confirmed by The Art Shop before the order proceeds.
Will my portrait arrive framed and ready to hang?
Yes. Unless your portrait is offered as part of a special canvas-only promotion, it will arrive framed and ready to hang.
Is framing included with original artwork and prints?
Framing varies by product. Some pieces are sold framed, with the frame style and colour clearly stated on the individual product listing, while others are available frameless.
Where more than one frame option is available, the choices will be shown on the product listing. Each listing will also specify the artwork dimensions, materials and hanging details.
proofs and revisions
How long will it take to receive my digital proof?
Your digital proof will normally be sent approximately two weeks after we receive and approve suitable photographs.
If replacement photographs or additional information are required, the timeline will begin once we have everything needed to create the artwork.
After the proof has been approved by the customer, the final portrait will normally be delivered approximately two weeks later.
Can I request changes to the proof?
Yes. You can review the proof and request permitted adjustments before approving it for production.
Revisions are intended for reasonable likeness and colour refinements. A completely different photograph, style or composition may require the artwork to be restarted.
How many revisions are included?
Your order includes up to two permitted revisions. Requests beyond the included revisions may be subject to an additional fee.
Additional revision rounds, or delays in providing feedback or approval, will extend the production schedule and shift the expected delivery date accordingly.
What does the digital proof show?
The proof allows you to review the composition, likeness, general colour direction, style and overall appearance of the artwork before production.
It does not fully reproduce the physical texture, material, scale or exact appearance of the finished portrait.
Will the colours on my screen look exactly the same as the finished portrait?
There may be slight differences. Screens vary in brightness, colour and contrast, while the finished portrait is viewed on a physical material under real-world lighting.
We carefully review the artwork before production, but a digital screen cannot reproduce the physical finish with complete accuracy.
When does physical production begin?
Physical production begins only after you have formally approved your digital proof.
artwork and production
How is the artwork created?
We use a combination of artistic, digital and mixed-media techniques to transform your photograph into custom artwork.
The portrait is developed and reviewed by our creative team, then hand-finished with brushstrokes for texture and depth.
Is the portrait hand-painted?
It is not a traditional hand-painted commission.
It is custom mixed-media artwork created from your photograph using a combination of artistic and digital techniques, followed by a hand-finished treatment.
What does “paint-embellished mixed-media artwork” mean?
It means the portrait is created using mixed digital and mixed-media techniques rather than paint alone.
The finished artwork is hand-finished with brushstrokes to add texture, depth and a more painterly appearance.
What materials do you use?
Our standard portraits are produced on premium canvas and professionally finished in a Black Floater Frame. Canvas-only portraits may occasionally be offered as part of a special promotion.
Where is the artwork produced?
All of our portraits, original artwork and prints are produced in the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario.
Is The Art Shop a Canadian company?
Yes. The Art Shop is a proudly Canadian company based in Toronto.
How should I care for and clean my artwork?
Use only a clean feather duster to gently remove dust from portraits, original artwork, prints and frames.
Do not wipe or rub the artwork. Do not use water, household cleaners, sprays, cloths or abrasive products.
Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, excessive humidity and extreme temperature changes.
timing, collection and delivery
How long does the entire portrait process take?
Your digital proof will normally be ready approximately two weeks after we receive and approve suitable photographs.
Once you approve the proof, allow approximately another two weeks for production, finishing, framing where applicable, and delivery. The overall timeline may be longer if photographs, feedback or approval are delayed.
How soon after approving my proof will my portrait be ready?
Your final portrait will normally be delivered approximately two weeks after final proof approval.
Please review the proof and either approve it or provide feedback within two business days of receiving it. Delays in providing feedback or approval will affect the production schedule and shift the expected delivery date accordingly.
How will I know when my portrait is ready?
We’ll contact you using the email address or phone number associated with your order.
For an order placed through an Authorized Selling Partner, the partner may also contact you when the portrait is ready for collection.
Where do I collect my portrait?
Orders placed through an Authorized Selling Partner are normally collected from that partner’s location.
If you place an online portrait order and your account is linked to an Authorized Selling Partner, your finished portrait will normally be available for pickup from the original partner location associated with your account. If you are unable to collect it from that location, shipping or delivery may be arranged for an additional fee.
Do you offer delivery or shipping?
Original artwork and prints purchased directly through www.theartshop.com are shipped or delivered directly to your address. Standard shipping or delivery within the Greater Toronto Area is included in the listed price.
How long will my original artwork or print take to arrive?
The estimated production and delivery time is stated on each product listing. Delivery times may vary depending on the type of artwork, size and finish selected.
Can you accommodate a specific date or gift deadline?
Please tell us about your deadline before ordering. We’ll let you know whether the requested date is achievable based on photograph suitability, proof approval, production capacity and delivery requirements.
Holiday delivery depends on receiving suitable photographs and proof approval by the applicable deadlines.
changes, cancellations and returns
Can I change the size, orientation or style after ordering?
Contact us as soon as possible. Changes may be possible before the artwork process begins, although a price adjustment may be required.
Once work on the proof has begun, changes to the size, orientation, style or source photograph may require the artwork to be restarted and must be reviewed by The Art Shop.
Can I cancel my order?
You may cancel your order within 48 hours of the original purchase date and time for a full refund.
For an order placed through an Authorized Selling Partner, the cancellation request must be made directly to the partner that processed your payment.
For a purchase made directly through www.theartshop.com, please email hello@theartshop.com within the 48-hour cancellation period. Use the subject line “Cancel Order # [your order number]” and include your full name, order number and cancellation request in the body of the email.
After the 48-hour cancellation period, the order becomes final and cannot be cancelled or refunded because our products are made to order.
Any approved refund will be returned to the original payment method by the business that processed the payment. Processing times may vary depending on your bank, credit-card issuer or payment provider.
Do you accept returns or exchanges?
No. Our portraits, original artwork and prints are made to order, so we do not accept returns or exchanges.
For custom portraits, nothing enters physical production until you have reviewed and approved the digital proof. If an item arrives damaged or contains a verified production error, we will review the issue and arrange an appropriate remedy. Damage and production errors are addressed separately and are not treated as ordinary returns.
What happens if I do not submit suitable photographs within 21 days?
Once The Art Shop emails you instructions for submitting your photographs, you have 21 days from the date of that email to provide all photographs required to create your portrait.
The photographs must be reviewed and accepted by The Art Shop. Sending a photograph does not complete this requirement if the image is too small, dark, blurred, cropped or otherwise unsuitable.
If suitable photographs have not been received and accepted within 21 days, the order becomes inactive. The amount paid is not automatically refunded. The amount remains available as a customer credit with The Art Shop for two years from the original purchase date.
Your original portrait price is protected for six months from the original purchase date:
- If you reactivate the order within six months, the original price applies.
- After six months, the credit remains valid, but current portrait pricing applies. Promotional and sale pricing does not apply to reactivated orders.
- If the current price is higher, you will need to pay the difference.
Delays in submitting suitable photographs do not restart or extend the 21-day submission period, the six-month original-price protection period, or the two-year customer-credit period.
What happens if my portrait, original artwork or print arrives damaged?
If you are collecting a portrait from an Authorized Selling Partner, please inspect it carefully before leaving the premises. If you notice visible damage, do not take the artwork with you. The partner will retain it and contact The Art Shop so we can arrange the appropriate remedy. Once the portrait has been inspected, accepted and removed from the Authorized Selling Partner’s premises, claims for visible damage that could reasonably have been identified during the pickup inspection will not be accepted.
If a portrait, original artwork, print or other product is shipped or delivered directly to you and arrives damaged, please contact The Art Shop promptly and provide:
- Your order number
- Clear photographs of the damage
- A photograph of the complete artwork
- Photographs of the exterior and interior packaging
- A photograph of the shipping label, where applicable
Please retain the artwork and all original packaging until the claim has been reviewed. Once the damage has been verified, we will arrange a replacement.
What happens if the finished portrait does not match the approved proof?
Contact us with photographs of the finished portrait.
If there is a verified production error and the finished artwork does not reasonably match the approved proof, we will work with you to rectify the problem.
Changes of mind after approving the proof are not considered production errors.
gifts and special portraits
Can I order a portrait as a gift?
Yes. A custom portrait can be a meaningful gift for a birthday, holiday, anniversary, new home or other special occasion.
Please allow enough time for photographs, proof review, production and delivery.
Can the person receiving the gift approve the proof directly?
Yes. Let us know when placing the order and provide the appropriate recipient contact information so we can coordinate proof approval with the correct person.
Only one person may be designated to provide feedback and approval for the portrait.
Can you create a memorial portrait?
Yes. A portrait can be created as a meaningful way to remember and celebrate a much-loved pet or family member.
All photographs must be submitted digitally. If the only image you have is a printed photograph, please take a clear, well-lit, straight-on photograph of it, making sure there is no glare, shadow or reflection. Send us the highest-resolution digital image available, and we’ll assess whether it contains enough detail to create a portrait that meets our standards.
Can you create a portrait of a family member or an entire family?
Yes. We create portraits of individuals, couples and families, as well as portraits that bring people and pets together.
Can I order more than one copy of the same portrait?
Additional copies are available. Contact us before production so we can confirm the available sizes, pricing and fulfilment timing.
pricing and payment
What determines the price of a portrait?
Portrait pricing is based primarily on:
- The number of subjects
- The finished size
The Black Floater Frame is included in the listed portrait price unless the portrait is offered as part of a special canvas-only promotion.
Are prices based on size and number of subjects?
Yes. Larger portraits and portraits containing more subjects generally have higher prices. Available sizes also vary by subject count.
Does the price include the Black Floater Frame?
Yes. The listed portrait price includes the Black Floater Frame unless otherwise stated as part of a special promotion.
Are taxes included in the listed prices?
No. All listed prices are before tax. Applicable taxes are added at the time of purchase.
When is payment required?
Full payment is required when the order is placed.
For an in-location order, payment is made to the Authorized Selling Partner. For a direct online order, payment is made through The Art Shop’s website.
Why must the portrait be paid for before the artwork is created?
Every portrait is custom-made for a specific customer. Full payment confirms your purchase and allows the order to proceed after the applicable cancellation period.
Our creative process begins once The Art Shop has received and approved suitable photographs. Nothing enters physical production until you have reviewed and approved the digital proof.
